Dr. Catherine N. Montoya (Diné), an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, is an Assistant Professor of Native American Studies and faculty in the Borderlands and Ethnic Studies department at New Mexico State University. She earned a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership and was the first graduate of the Native American Leadership in Education inaugural cohort from the University of New Mexico. Prior to becoming an Assistant Professor at NMSU, Dr. Montoya has experience working in higher education at the University of New Mexico and the University of Notre Dame primarily in student services, especially in promoting Native college student success since 2004. Dr. Montoya also has a Masters of Public Administration with a concentration in Human Resources Management from UNM and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Native American Studies from Dartmouth College. Dr. Montoya’s research focuses on Native college student success and retention, Native higher education professional networks and community, and utilizing Indigenous methodologies.
